What is the birth flower for April?

The best place to start is by letting you know the April flower of the month. Luckily, there are two delicious blooms to pick – the daisy and the sweet pea.

Daisy

Simple, understated yet utterly beautiful, daisies are the ultimate symbol of spring and summer. While most of us instantly think of those daisies growing amongst the grass in summer months, there are in fact a whole range of options out there. From the classic common daisy to the striking coneflower and vibrant gerbera, there are many types of daisies to choose from. One common feature? Most have a bright yellow center surrounded by a halo of petals.

As humble as the daisy may look, this is a flower that has stood the test of time. It’s believed the Egyptians would use the flower to soothe the skin and aid digestion while the Celts thought the spirits of still born children were reborn as daisies. Jump forward again to the Anglo Saxons and the flowers earned the name we recognise today. It comes from their phrase ‘Daeges Eage’ which translates as ‘day’s eye’.

Sweet Pea

Next up we have the sweetly named sweet pea. These annual climbing plants are grown for their delicate flowers, gorgeous colours (you usually find them in shades of blue, pink, purple and white) and of course the stunning scent they produce. This flowers actually belongs to the legume family (yep, the same one as peas and beans) and originally came from Sicily.

The first recorded entry of the wild sweet pea was by a monk called Franciscus Cupani in 1695 who sent the seeds to plantsmen across Europe. Jump forward a hundred years or so and breeders were hard at work cross breeding the plant. One notable breeder is Henry Eckford of Shropshire (he became known as the Father of the Sweet Pea) who transformed the sweet pea into the popular annual plant we know and love. There are many examples of his cross-bred varieties popularly used in our gardens.

Meaning behind the April birth flowers

So which is the best flower to buy someone born in April? Well, if they’re born in the first part of the month, they are an Aries. Loud, proud, strong and brave, they are the star sign that loves to command attention which makes them perfectly suited to sweet peas. Although the flowers may look delicate and diminutive, the sweet scent that wafts across the garden which makes them pretty hard to miss.

This star sign can also get bored very quickly much like the sweet pea which, if you don’t keep deadheading, will give up and stop flowering. However, anyone born in early April is also incredibly generous. This makes them perfectly suited to sweet peas which, during the Victorian era, were given to say thank you to friends and family for their hospitality.

That doesn’t mean anyone born in the early part of the month isn’t also suited to the daisy. Aries, as the first sign of the zodiac, is all about new beginnings which is perfectly matched to the daisy. After all this flower got its name ‘days eye’ because each morning the flower would open up and welcome the new day.

What about anyone born under the sign of Taurus at the end of April? These are the thinkers of the zodiac. In fact, you could almost say they overthink everything by pulling apart a situation to understand how it all works. It is this same trait that makes them very calm and in control with the ability to reach their own conclusions. This makes them perfectly suited to not only the daisy, which represents freethinking and independence, but also sweet peas in blue which represent calmness.

Daisies also represent beauty, love and romance. Ideal for anyone born in late April who is known to be a sensual person who truly appreciates everything looking gorgeous.
